Overview of Study in Canada Scholarships
The Study in Canada Scholarships program provides opportunities for international students from eligible countries to participate in short-term study or research programs at Canadian post-secondary institutions.

Promote research and educational excellence

Enhance bilateral relations and support Canada’s international trade strategy
Note: This program focuses on short-term exchanges, replacing the previous full-degree scholarships. At least 50 scholarships are awarded annually, with numbers increasing over time.
Who Can Apply?
Eligible Students
Applicants must:

Be full-time students at post-secondary institutions in eligible countries
-
Be citizens of one of the following regions:
Asia: Taiwan, Bangladesh, Nepal
Europe: Ukraine, Turkey
Middle East & North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia
Sub-Saharan Africa: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda
Ineligible Students

Canadian citizens or permanent residents
-
Students already enrolled in a Canadian program
-
Students currently receiving other Canadian government scholarships
Canadian Institutions Eligibility
Canadian post-secondary institutions must:

Hold Designated Learning Institution (DLI) status
-
Have student exchange agreements with the applicant’s home institution (tuition exemption required)

Submit scholarship applications online
-
Notify students and home institutions about any non-waivable fees
Scholarship Value and Duration
The scholarships are funded by Global Affairs Canada (DFATD) and distributed via Canadian institutions:

Undergraduate/College/Graduate (Master’s & PhD): CAD 10,000 for 4 months or one academic term

Graduate students (Master’s & PhD): CAD 12,700 for 5–6 months

Administrative support for Canadian institutions: CAD 500 per recipient
Eligible Expenses
Scholarship funds can cover:

Airfare (cheapest route)

Health insurance
-
Living costs (housing, food, utilities)
-
Local transportation (public transit passes)
-
Books and research materials (computers excluded)
Funds are provided after Canadian institutions receive DFATD funding. Institutions must return the funds if the student declines the scholarship.
Application Requirements for Students
Students must provide:

Proof of citizenship – Passport or national ID (Taiwanese students must include household registration)

Privacy notice declaration – Signed and dated

Letter of intent (1 page max) – Explain study/research plans, choice of institution/supervisor, and career impact

Home institution confirmation (1 page max) – Verify full-time enrollment
-
Supporting letter from home institution (1 page max) – Highlight benefits to home institution and program
-
Letter of invitation (graduate students only) – From Canadian supervisor, outlining research collaboration
-
Copy of MOU or agreement – Confirm tuition exemption and partnership
Documents must be recent (≤6 months old), in English or French, and under 5 MB (.pdf, .jpg, .doc, .docx, .txt, .gif).
Application Process

Canadian institutions submit online applications on behalf of students

Students confirm internal deadlines with their home and Canadian institutions

Applications are ranked based on merit, institutional benefit, and strategic priorities
-
DFATD finalizes selections; Canadian institutions are notified by May 2026
-
Recipients start studies or research between August 1, 2026, and February 1, 2027
Students must obtain the required study or work permit to enter Canada
