WAEC 2026 Mathematics Essay (Theory) Answers

Sample Theory Questions & Solutions:

1. Evaluate:

$$\frac{2}{3} + \frac{5}{6} - \frac{1}{4}$$

Solution:
LCM of denominators = 12

$$= \frac{8}{12} + \frac{10}{12} - \frac{3}{12} = \frac{15}{12} = \frac{5}{4}$$

Answer: $\frac{5}{4}$ or 1.25

2. A trader bought 50 oranges for ₦1,000. She sold each orange at ₦30. Find her percentage profit.

Solution:

• Cost price (C.P) = ₦1,000

• Selling price (S.P) = 50 × ₦30 = ₦1,500

• Profit = ₦1,500 – ₦1,000 = ₦500

• Profit % = $\dfrac{500}{1000} \times 100 = 50\%$
  Answer: 50% profit

3. The ages of 5 students are 12, 14, 15, 13, 16. Find the mean age.

Solution:
Sum = 12 + 14 + 15 + 13 + 16 = 70
Mean = $\dfrac{70}{5} = 14$
Answer: 14 years
